Conservatives turn to Boris Johnson to fight Reform threat
Mr Sunak and Mr Johnson did not speak during the campaign, according to a Johnson ally, suggesting their relationship is not completely healed. They had shared texts on political issues between Israel and Gaza the day before the snap elections were called.
An ally of Mr Johnson told the Telegraph he was still considering whether to campaign in person. When asked why the conservative campaign wanted to deploy him, the source said: The simple answer is that he's being sidelined. This is rare in this conservative campaign.
Conservative campaign sources close to Mr Johnson rejected any suggestion there was friction between the two camps. They stressed that Mr Johnson had not refused any specific offer to attend a campaign event.
One idea was that he would campaign in the Red Wall seats he won in 2019. In the past, his allies have said Mr Sunak should call and ask for his help.
With limited time left before the election, Mr Johnson's overseas commitments complicate the situation. He is traveling abroad again this week and is not expected to return until shortly before election day.
He sees himself as an election winner, and he may be reluctant to participate in a campaign threatened with failure, especially if he ever wants to launch a political comeback. One ally predicted he would not hold an in-person campaign event.
The Conservatives are still behind Labor by around 20 percentage points in the polls with less than three weeks until the July 4 general election. Some poll analysis suggests they could end up with fewer than 100 MPs.
