Ministries demand more funds for IKN relocation – Politics
Several government ministries and agencies have requested larger budgets to facilitate their move to the capital Nusantara (IKN) next year, a project inherited from President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo that has been hampered by delays, lack of investment and land acquisition problems.
Jokowi pushed to move the national capital from congested and sinking Jakarta to Nusantara in East Kalimantan before leaving office in October. He is expected to inaugurate the new city during Independence Day celebrations on August 17.
The inauguration will be followed by a first wave of relocations in September that will see nearly 12,000 civil servants call Nusantara their new home, about two months after Jokowi and a handful of ministers begin working there in July. More civil servants are expected to be transferred in batches in the future.
During a series of meetings at the House of Representatives this month, a number of government ministries and agencies requested increased budgets to meet Nusantara's expenses for the 2025 fiscal year.
The IKN Authority, for example, said it would need an additional 29.8 trillion rupiah ($1.8 billion) for next year's budget.
IKN Authority acting deputy director Raja Juli Antoni said in a meeting on June 10 that the additional funds would be used to manage state assets in the future capital, especially once the Ministry of Works and Housing will have handed over the assets to the IKN Authority.
