Imran and the army

In recent interviews, Imran Khan said that ally-turned-enemy Aleem Khan was one of the two main reasons why he had disagreements with Army Chief General Bajwa. This is only partially true and the disagreements were much deeper. Khan's challenge to his powerful benefactors set the stage for a confrontation like never before. Imran feels invincible because of the public's unwavering support, and he raises the stakes every time the army tries to overpower him.

He accused a top intelligence general, in addition to his main political rivals, of being behind the gun attack that cost him his life last month. In a letter to President Alvi, Khan said the hunt was on against the country's intelligence chief and the army's chief spokesperson, demanding action against the two generals ahead of a press conference public against him.

Even though Khan is targeting these officers, it is clear that his real target is elsewhere. In public appearances, Khan has launched powerful tirades against the role of the security establishment in the country's politics. He questioned the country's pervasive influence and primary role. But many remain confused about the real reason for this decision. Has Imran become the torchbearer of civilian supremacy, or is he content to blackmail the military into submission by raising the constant specter of violence and mass protests?

Even Khan struggles to answer this question clearly, as his recent interview with TRT TV makes clear. The press conference by the Director General of the ISI and the Director General of the ISPR revealed that although Khan had a threatening and confrontational public attitude, he was simultaneously trying to mend fences behind the scenes. Some may view Khan's strategy as effective realpolitik.

But Khan's brinkmanship has also taken things to the extreme and can be seen as an escalation that risks dangerous consequences. His relentless protest campaign, which calls into question the neutrality of the army, has triggered a wave of public discontent and widened the fissures that already exist in the country's political system. He's a genie that even Imran can't put back in the bottle.

The new army chief will face a series of immediate challenges, with little time to settle in. The bitter political residue of recent months will weigh heavily, and Imran's policies may put pressure on the apolitical wishes of the top brass. Even if the new leader decides to appease Khan in some way, history tells us that it will be impossible for him to cede proverbial power to a civilian challenger.
