Boris Johnson will no longer join the Conservatives' election campaign because the party no longer believes it has a realistic chance of winning the seats it won at Red Wall in 2019.

Those who work within CCHQ also believe Mr Johnson does not have the same appeal with voters in the south of the country, where much of the Conservative campaign has been focused so far.

Mr Johnson has so far endorsed around 50 Conservative candidates, sending personalized video messages, while putting his name on tens of thousands of letters sent to voters.

It comes after Rishi Sunak said the former prime minister's support would “make a difference”.

But Mr Johnson is not expected to take the further step of joining the campaign trail and will instead leave for his second summer holiday in the coming days.

He is expected to return on July 3, the Times reports, the day before the public goes to the polls.

It is understood Mr Johnson was expected to join the Conservatives on the campaign trail.

However, those plans fell through after Mr Sunak decided to wake up early and call a summer election.

The Prime Minister's allies are also “worried” that Mr Johnson will create a “media circus” if he returns to the campaign trail.
