Jokowi stresses that victims of online gambling will not receive any social assistance
Karanganyar, Central Java (ANTARA) – President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) did not mince words when stating that the government would not provide social assistance to people who are victims of online gambling practices.
“No help,” the president stressed after inspecting irrigation water pumping in Central Java’s Karanganyar district on Wednesday.
The head of state also stressed that the government had ruled out the possibility of providing social assistance to families economically affected by online gambling. “No help,” he reiterated.
Earlier, Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture (PMK) Muhadjir Effendy clarified that his side was discussing the plan to provide social assistance that would be exclusively available to affected family members and not to online gamers themselves. .
“Note my entire statement. We believe that online gambling players should face legal consequences because they are considered criminals. What I mean here by welfare is aid dedicated to their children, their wife or their husband”, he underlined Monday (June 17).
Effendy made the statement in response to people's reactions on social media to the speech on social assistance presented by the PMK coordinating ministry.
According to Effendy, such social assistance could economically help family members affected by online gambling, thereby protecting them from the mental strain that would result.
The minister further explained that his office had proposed providing assistance to victims of online gambling to complement the establishment of the Task Force for the Eradication of Online Gambling.
The task force, whose working period will last until December 31 this year, was formed on June 14 following Presidential Decree No. 21 of 2024 issued by President Joko Widodo.
Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Hadi Tjahjanto chairs the working group, while Minister Effendy serves as his deputy.
