Slipper thrown at PM Modi's car in Varanasi, UP
A thrown slipper ended up on Prime Minister Narendra Modi's car on Tuesday June 19, while he was visiting his parliamentary constituency, Varanasi. A chappal (slipper) was thrown at the prime minister's car as his convoy passed a crowd gathered to welcome him. A video of the security personnel removing the slipper went massively viral on social media.
This was Prime Minister Modi's recent visit to the constituency after winning the seat in the recently concluded Lok Sabha elections.
Prime Minister Narender Modi won the Lok Sabha seat by a small margin of 1,52,513, settling at a tally of 6,12,940, contesting against state Congress chief Ajay Rai. According to data from electoral commissions, this margin has only narrowed compared to the last two elections in 2019 and 2014.
In 2019, Prime Minister Modi won the Lok Sabha polls by a margin of 4,79,505 votes (45.2%), while in 2014, he won by a margin of 3,71,784 votes (36.14 %).
This incident raised questions about his waning popularity among the population. Unlike the last two terms, the BJP did not obtain a majority and was only able to muster 240 seats. The party was forced to form a coalition with its NDA partners to secure a majority of 270 seats. The BJP-led NDA won a total of 293 seats, of which 28 were secured by Bihar Chief Minister and JD(U) supremo Nitish Kumar and Andhra Pradesh CM and TDP national president Chandrababu Naidu.
The INDIA bloc obtained 232 seats, including 99 in Congress alone.
It may be recalled that in an interview given to a news channel after the elections, a BJP worker, agitated by the functioning of the party, had claimed that Prime Minister Modi, who was initially behind by 8,000 votes in the Varanasi constituency in the Lok Sabha elections, reportedly won the seat after “votes were held” for him.
