MERAHPUTIH I KARANGANYAR – President Joko Widodo reviewed the implementation of the water pump assistance program for rice field irrigation and agriculture or pumping in Central Java Province, Wednesday (06/19). During his visit to Krendowahono Village, Gondang Rejo District, Karanganyar Regency, the President highlighted that this program is part of the government's efforts to overcome the potential drought expected to occur in the coming months.
“This pumping is not only taking place in Central Java, not only in Karanganyar, but in all provinces. We expect that there will be a long drought in July, August, September and October,” President Jokowi said.
With the help of water pumps, President Jokowi aims to increase rice production in Central Java province by 1.3 million tons. The government has distributed 4,300 water pumps across 35 districts/cities in this province.
“In Central Java, pumps were imported, they were received in the province, at the regional military command, 4,300 pumps, both those with a PK of 8.5 PK and those with 18 PK like the ones here “, he added.
This pumping project involves drawing water from rivers and groundwater to support irrigation during the dry season. Apart from this, the President also said that artificial rains would be maximized at the end of the rainy season to support this effort.
On another occasion, Minister of Agriculture Andi Amran Sulaiman further explained the government's strategy to overcome the impact of El Nino and drought, which are expected to occur early. According to him, pumping constitutes a concrete and rapid measure to mitigate the impact of drought.
“Why do we install water pumps? Because it's a quick fix. “Today we pump, today we can plant because if we print rice fields it takes time,” declared the Minister of Agriculture.
The Minister of Agriculture went on to say that it is hoped that this effort will not only overcome the lack of water supply during the dry season, but also increase productivity and harvest index, contributing thus improving the well-being of farmers.
The government is targeting this pumping to reach 1 million hectares of agricultural land and plans to create 1 million hectares of new rice fields per year as part of a long-term strategy. This is part of a broader effort to make Indonesia one of the world's food baskets in the future.
