President Jokowi insists research into benefits of kratom continues
Jakarta (ANTARA) – President Joko Widodo has asked the Ministry of Health, the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) and the National Food and Drug Authority (BPOM) to continue research into the benefits of the kratom plant (Mitragyna speciosa).
“The president places emphasis on optimizing (research) on the benefits of the kratom plant,” said Head of Presidential Office (KSP) Moeldoko after attending a closed-door meeting on legalization on Thursday kratom at the presidential palace.
Moeldoko pointed out that during the meeting, discussions centered on the findings of the Ministry of Health concluding that kratom is not a dangerous narcotic substance and can be used as a pain reliever.
However, the government has decided to wait for the conclusion of related research carried out by BRIN, expected next August, he noted.
The KSP chief explained that the government also discussed regulating kratom trade and management to address public complaints, especially from some 18,000 families in West Kalimantan who struggle to export the plants of kratom that they produce due to the lack of standardization of the products.
People in Kalimantan have long used kratom as a stimulant, with effects comparable to those of drinking coffee. He said that consuming kratom carries a low risk of addiction.
“We need to regulate its management and trade to ensure that kratom is no longer contaminated with unhealthy substances, (such as) salmonella, E. coli and heavy metals,” Moeldoko stressed.
“(Kratom exports) are decreasing because we do not have (set) standards, which leads to the rejection of our products and a drop in their prices,” he stressed.
According to data from the Ministry of Commerce, Indonesia exported most of its kratom to the United States between January and May 2023, with the export value reaching $4.86 million.
Indonesia has also exported its kratom to Germany, India and the Czech Republic.
Kratom leaves are known to contain active ingredients namely the alkaloids mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine. These two active ingredients have analgesic or analgesic effects.
The active compound mitragynine in kratom has the potential to cause addiction, similar to narcotics. Consumption of Kratom causes feelings of relaxation and comfort as well as excessive euphoria if taken in large doses.
Widely grown in the Kalimantan region, kratom leaves are commonly used to brew tea or made into supplements useful for reducing pain, improving skin health, and increasing libido.
The BNN said the use of kratom is not yet regulated by the Narcotics Act, so regional government regulations cannot limit its use.
