Trump wants business leaders who don't support him to be fired

Donald Trump apparently expected to make an impression last week when he attended the Business Roundtables' quarterly meeting and met with a room full of prominent American CEOs. However, by most accounts, the rally was a bit of a disaster: CNBC's Andrew Ross Sorkin reported that many attendees said the former president was remarkably meandering and couldn't keep a clear thought.

A CEO who attended the closed-door event concluded: Trump doesn't know what he's talking about.

That put the presumptive Republican nominee on the defensive. In fact, in recent days he has published several posts on his social media platform, insisting that the Business Roundtable was in fact a great success despite the fact that some of the CEOs were, as Trump said, Biden supporters.

It is in this context that the GOP candidate made a new statement yesterday. NBC News reported:

Former President Donald Trump said Tuesday that business executives and shareholder representatives should support him 100% or face firing.

This may seem exaggerated. It's not. The presumptive Republican nominee literally wrote: Business leaders and shareholder representatives should be 100% behind Donald Trump! Anyone who doesn't should be fired for incompetence!

Certainly, during Trump's tenure in the White House, there were many examples of the then-president trying to bully businesses into submission and targeting businesses that bothered him for one reason or another. As regular readers may recall, Trump went after Goodyear, GM, Harley-Davidson, Nordstrom, Amazon and AT&T, among others.

In the not-so-distant past, the right has condemned such initiatives as gangster government. Conservatives, however, had no such concerns when Trump embraced these intimidation campaigns from the Oval Office.

After his defeat in 2020, the Republican continued this momentum, announcing earlier this year that he was compiling a list of private sector entities he considers woke. He added that he might just release his secret list for the world to see.

But this week's missive represents a clear escalation: It's one thing for a politician to complain about American business executives who have bothered him for trivial reasons; it's another when one of the main candidates for the highest office in the country call for the dismissal of private sector leaders. for not supporting his quest for power.

There are authoritarian systems in which such rhetoric is common. This is simply not a situation the United States is accustomed to.
