Narendra Modi inaugurates new campus of Nalanda University in Bihar
Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Bihar on Wednesday, June 19, to inaugurate the new campus of Nalanda University, near the ruins of the old Rajgir University.
The campus is named after the original Nalanda University, which flourished more than 1,600 years ago and attracted scholars from around the world. Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar and ambassadors of 17 partner countries attended the event
The new campus is spread over 455 acres and has been constructed at a cost of Rs 1,749 crore.
The new campus includes two classroom buildings with 40 rooms, two large meeting rooms with 300 seats each, student accommodation with around 550 beds, a meeting place for people from different countries, a large open-air theater air for 2,000 people. , a club for teachers, and a sports venue, among others.
The university is home to several schools: Buddhist studies, philosophy and comparative religions; historical studies; Studies on ecology and environment; and Sustainable development and management.
The idea of building this campus in Rajgir was inspired by former President APJ Abdul Kalam's vision of bringing back the ancient Nalanda University.
He spoke about this in a speech before the Bihar Vidhan Mandal in 2006. Nalanda University is considered one of the first places in the world where students lived during their studies.
PM Modi tweeted, “Today we are inaugurating the new campus of Nalanda University. It is a reiteration of our commitment to encouraging learning, research and innovation. It is also an effort to attract the world's best scholars to come and continue their studies in our country.
“Visiting the excavated remains of Nalanda was exemplary. It was an opportunity to be in one of the greatest centers of learning in the ancient world. This site offers a profound insight into the scientific past that once thrived here. Nalanda created an intellectual spirit that continues to thrive in our country,” he added.
