Five dead, dozens injured in forest fire in southeast Turkey
Five people died and dozens were injured during a huge forest fire which ravaged several villages in the Kurdish southeast of Turkey overnight, the Minister of Health announced on Friday.
Images posted on social media showed flames raging across a wide area, lighting up the night sky as vast clouds of smoke rose into the air.
“Five people died and 44 were injured, including 10 seriously,” when the fire swept through two areas between the provinces of Diyarbakir and Mardin, Health Minister Fahrettin Koca wrote on X, formerly Twitter.
Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya said the fire broke out late Thursday, when a “stubble burn” spread rapidly about 30 kilometers south of Diyabakir due to strong winds, affecting five villages.
The health minister said seven emergency teams and 35 ambulances had been sent to the scene.
The pro-Kurdish DEM party, in an article on X, urged authorities to “intervene quickly” to tackle the aerial fire as it raged early Friday.
“So far, intervention on the ground has not been enough. The authorities must intervene in a more comprehensive and aerial manner, without wasting time,” he said.
According to the latest figures from the European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS), Turkey has experienced 74 forest fires so far this year, which have ravaged 12,910 hectares of land.
In the summer of 2021, Turkey suffered the worst wildfires on record, which left nine people dead and destroyed huge swathes of forested land on its Mediterranean and Aegean coasts.
The disaster sparked a political crisis after it emerged that Turkey did not have operational firefighting planes, putting pressure on President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who was forced to accept international aid .
It also prompted Ankara to delay Turkey in ratifying the Paris Climate Accord, becoming the last of the Group of 20 major economies to do so.
Experts say climate change risks fueling more fires and other disasters in Turkey unless action is taken to tackle the problem.
