Narendra Modi leads massive yoga session in predominantly Muslim Indian region
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi led a massive yoga session in the Muslim-majority region of Kashmir on Friday, an act that some interpreted as a political message from the Hindu nationalist leader.
The session held in Srinagar, the capital of the Indian-controlled Kashmir region, marked the 10th anniversary of the International Day of Yoga, a UN initiative promoted by Modi himself.
But although yoga is not a religious practice per se, it has its origins in Hindu philosophy and many residents of Indian Kashmir, who are predominantly Muslim, are indifferent to the practice.
Thousands of civil servants, teachers and students from across Kashmir attended the event, which one Srinagar resident considered a cultural intrusion.
“They impose yoga on our children to culturally change the next generations and control their minds,” he told AFP, speaking on condition of anonymity for fear of reprisals.
After the session, Modi urged hundreds of people, including many police and armed forces personnel who were on the banks of Dal Lake, to incorporate yoga “into their daily lives.”
“Yoga promotes strength, health and well-being,” said the 73-year-old prime minister.
During his decade as prime minister, Modi built an image as a staunch defender of the country's majority Hindu faith. His positions worry minorities, including the Muslim community of more than 200 million people.
