Trump says Joan Rivers voted for him. She died 2 years before the elections

Donald Trump said the late comedian Joan Rivers voted for him when he ran for president in 2016. But Rivers died in September 2014, more than two years before the presidential election.

Journalist Ramin Setoodeh interviewed Trump, now 78, at length for his new book, Apprentice in Wonderland. During a conversation on Celebrity Apprentice, Setoodeh discussed Rivers' political views.

Joan said she was a Republican, did you know that? Setoodeh asked Trump.

I thought she might have been a Republican, Trump replied. I know one thing: she voted for me, from what she said.

PEOPLE reached out to Trump's spokesperson for comment on this impossible claim and did not receive an immediate response.

Trump and Rivers crossed paths when she and his daughter, Melissa, appeared on Celebrity Apprentice in 2009. Melissa was fired from the competition in the ninth episode of the season.

Rivers, meanwhile, ended up winning the season. Joan was so angry, Trump said, according to Apprentice in Wonderland. She got mad when I kicked the girl out.

Joan loved Melissa more than anything she had ever loved before, he continued. She thought Melissa was the be-all and end-all and went crazy defending her daughter. Oh, they were both screaming. It was great TV. But maybe Joan had more right to scream.

Setoodeh, who spoke with Trump six times for his book after the Republican politician left the White House, claimed during a recent appearance on MSNBC that the former president had serious memory problems.

As the journalist who spent the most time with him, I have to say that he didn't remember some things. He didn’t even remember me,” Setoodeh said.

A Trump spokesperson defended the former president's memory in a statement to PEOPLE at the time, saying in part: “President Trump knew who this individual was throughout the interview process, but this writer did not “He's a nobody and insignificant, so of course he never made an impression.”
