With PM Modi in town, Mirwaiz leads Friday prayers at Srinagars Jama Masjid

On June 21, the Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governors Administration decided, in a rare move, to allow Hurriyat president and valley religious leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq to lead the prayers of the congregation at the historic Jamia Masjid in Srinagar, on a day when Prime Minister Narendra Modi was present. the 10th International Yoga Day just 10 km away.
The move comes five days after the administration denied permission to Mirwaiz and Jama Masjid caretakers to hold identification prayers at the mosque on June 17. According to the Anjuman Auqaf Jama Masjid, identification prayers have been banned at Jama Masjid and Eidgah in the old city by the authorities since 2019, when the Center ended Jammu and Kashmir's special status.

In his Friday sermon, the Mirwaiz called for a review of the government policy to deny identification prayers at Jama Masjid and Idgah. We have held identity prayers in the most difficult times of the past. I don't understand what is stopping the administration from allowing these traditional congregational prayers, which is the right of Muslims, he said.
Calls for dialogue
The Hurriyat president denounced violence as a way to resolve problems and reiterated his call for dialogue. The Hurriyat strongly believe that dialogue and reconciliation are the only way forward. Violence is not a solution. Intimidation will not help anyone, Mirwaiz said, while urging residents to remain resolute and united. We are completely refused any political activity.
