Rejects the possibility of talks with the PML-N and says the government is on the verge of collapse. Requests the SC to promptly hear the plea for the formation of a commission to review the February 8 elections.

ISLAMABAD: Former Prime Minister Imran Khan on Friday highlighted the urgent need for reforms in Pakistan, which he said was facing serious crises and required surgery. He asserted that only a government with a public mandate can effectively implement these changes and rejected the possibility of negotiating with the PML-N, predicting the imminent collapse of the government.

Speaking from Rawalpindis Adiala Prison during a hearing into the $190 million case, Mr Khan expressed concern over the country's reliance on loans to repay past debts and criticized the tendency of Pakistanis to invest abroad, according to a BBC Urdu report.

Mr Khan also highlighted excessive taxation imposed on various sectors, arguing that it stifles investment.

The former prime minister criticized the Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC) for centralizing control and warned that the true impact of the recent budget would become apparent with the June and July bills. He also criticized the government for imposing heavy taxes on professionals and the general public in next year's budget.

Mr Khan also accused Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal of contempt of court for suggesting he should be jailed for five years, arguing such statements undermine the rule of law.

Responding to a question on negotiations with the government, Mr. Khan denied that the PTI had agreed to talks, clarifying that it had only suggested Mehmood Khan Achakzai as a potential mediator. He said all Mr Achakzai's proposals would be taken into consideration.

In his remarks to journalists, Mr. Khan dismissed the possibility of negotiations with the PML-N, predicting the imminent collapse of the government. He stressed that the nation is looking to the justice system to resolve the problem.

Asked about possible negotiations with a representative of the establishment, Mr Khan reiterated his willingness to step down if he was convinced it would benefit the country.

Election fraud investigation

Separately, the former prime minister also asked the Supreme Court on Friday for an early hearing on his request for the creation of a judicial commission to thoroughly investigate the February 8 general elections.

The plea, submitted by lead lawyer Hamid Khan, demands an investigation into what Mr. Khan claims were false and fraudulent election results, which he says turned winners into losers and vice versa.

The original petition, filed jointly by Mr Khan and the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI), insists that the commission should be composed of impartial judges of the Supreme Court.

Through a single-page early hearing application, Mr. Khan argued that since matters of public importance regarding the enforcement of fundamental rights were involved, the petition should be heard urgently. The motion requested that the case be set for June 25 in the week beginning June 24.

The application argued that the issues highlighted in the application pertained to the February 8 general elections, adding that the Constitution imposed an obligation on the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to hold free, fair and transparent elections, but that the commission failed in its duties. as provided for in articles 218 and 219 of the Constitution.

The petitioner was forced to file his petition due to allegations of election fraud and manipulation of results, denial of political justice, and granting of powers to genuine public representatives. Therefore, such allegations should be investigated by appointing a judicial commission comprising sitting judges of the Supreme Court.

The motion noted that important constitutional issues were involved in the petition, but the case has yet to be resolved since it was filed.

In the initial petition, Mr. Khan also sought immediate suspension of all acts consequent to the formation of governments at the Center and Punjab until the findings of the judicial commission are made public.

The Federal Government, through the Ministry of Justice, ECP, PML-N, PPP and MQM-P were named as respondents to the petition.

The petition regretted that a political party having elected representatives in the national and provincial assemblies cannot be deprived of reserved seats in these assemblies in proportion to the elected representatives, in accordance with articles 51 and 106 of the Constitution.

The petition pleaded that the courts of Pakistan cannot turn a blind eye to the allegedly obvious and apparent acts of authoritarianism, cruelty, oppression, repression and violation of fundamental rights on the part of the caretaker government and illegitimate governments. installed in the country. federal and provincial levels.

The Supreme Court cannot remain a spectator in the face of the violation of constitutional provisions and the non-respect of fundamental rights guaranteed by the Constitution, argues the petition.

The petition pointed out that there was ample evidence, in the form of video clips, reports and press statements from local and international media, to order a judicial investigation into the alleged electoral fraud committed by the ECP for the benefit of the political parties in power.

It claims that, under the noses of the chief electoral commissioners, the results of hundreds of constituencies were tabulated and announced after being allegedly altered under duress and manipulation and in collusion with caretaker governments, police officials and law enforcement.
