The leader of Turkey's main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP), Özgür Özel, suggested that their mayors Ekrem İmamoğlu and Mansur Yavaş would have won the 2023 presidential election against Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.
In its press release of June 22 columnjournalist Fatih Altaylı reported his meeting with Özel a day before the Eid al-Adha holiday.
“Özel (he said) found Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu's presidential candidacy in the last elections very wrong and shared it with him. He said: “If Ekrem Imamoğlu or Mansur Yavaş had been candidates, Erdoğan would not be in power right now,” Altaylı said.
After a controversial candidacy process, Kılıçdaroğlu emerged as the main opposition candidate for the 2023 presidential election.
The party leaders of the National Alliance, which included six opposition parties including the CHP, finally agreed on Kılıçdaroğlu's candidacy despite the temporary disagreement of Meral Akşener, then leader of the İYİ (Good) party. .
Some experts and political figures opposed his candidacy, saying he was not the right candidate to compete with Erdoğan.
In the second round, Kılıçdaroğlu received only 47.8 percent of the vote, paving the way for Erdoğan's re-election.
In November, Kılıçdaroğlu also lost the CHP congress after 13 years of rule, with Özgür Özel becoming the new leader of the CHP.
Altaylı also said that Özel considered İmamoğlu and Özel's vice-presidential candidacies in the 2023 elections to be “an operation to end their political future, but it did not work.”
Ahead of the May 2023 presidential elections, Akşener publicly rejected the presidential candidacy of Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, then head of the CHP, on March 3, despite the agreement of other parties in the alliance, claiming that his candidacy was imposed on the İYİ party.
A day later, Akşener said she supported Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu and Ankara Mayor Mansur Yavaş as candidates amid polls indicating they could perform better against President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. She later returned to the alliance after the leaders agreed on the vice-presidencies of Imamoğlu and Yavaş.
“Özgür Özel has no interest in running for president. This is what I understand about his approach. In the next presidential election, the CHP candidate will be either Ekrem İmamoğlu or Mansur Yavaş. Maybe both,” Altaylı added.
Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoğlu and Ankara Mayor Mansur Yavaş of the CHP are enjoying their second terms after their re-election in the March 31 local elections.
Özel also commented on his meeting with President Erdoğan and responded to criticism.
“I have never been a spokesperson for the AKP and I cannot be a partner in the 22 years of sins and crimes accumulated by the AKP. Today we are the largest party in Turkey, we are the leading party and we have the majority of municipalities. I met with the president to tell him about the problems of this majority and to talk about the works of our municipalities that are blocked by the government,” Özel said in Altaylı.
