Trump says he knows who his vice presidential pick will be
PHILADELPHIA Former President Donald Trump said Saturday he knows who his vice presidential pick will be and gave a hint about his likely plans for debate night.
When asked by NBC News during a campaign stop in Philadelphia if he had decided on his vice presidential pick, Trump responded, “in my mind, yes,” adding that this person will most likely be present at the Thursday's debate against President Joe Biden.
“They will be there,” he continued. “I think we have a lot of people coming.”
Trump said no one knows his choice yet. NBC News previously reported that Trump was focusing on Doug Burgum, JD Vance and Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., as possible leading contenders for the job.
Sources close to the selection process told NBC News that Burgum, the North Dakota governor, and Vance, an Ohio senator, were considered the top two finalists. Rubio is still under consideration, although a constitutional hiccup would require either Trump or Rubio to take up residence outside of Florida.
Trump senior adviser Brian Hughes said in a statement that the campaign's main criteria for selecting a vice presidential candidate is a strong leader who will make a great president for eight years after his next term ends. four-year term.
Trump holds informal policy sessions with confidants before the debate, including possible vice presidential contenders. Vance had a session with Trump on the economy and inflation, and Rubio had a discussion with Trump when the former president was in Washington earlier this month.
His comments Saturday came during a stop at a local Philadelphia restaurant before a rally. Pennsylvania is expected to be a swing state on the road to the White House. Biden flipped Pennsylvania blue in 2020 and continues to campaign across the state as the election approaches.
The former president said he plans to announce his vice presidential pick “right around the convention.”
“Maybe a little bit before, but it could be at the convention,” Trump said. “But we have great people.”
The Republican National Convention, where delegates from across the country will formally nominate the party's presidential and vice presidential nominees, is scheduled to be held July 15-18 in Milwaukee.
