Elections – latest: Investigators check bookmakers' bets on all bets over 20 as Tory betting scandal deepens

Tory election betting investigation: totally unacceptable if rules are not followed, says Welsh secretary

The investigation into betting on the date of the general election has been widened, with bookmakers asked to provide details of all bets over 20.

The Gambling Commission reportedly wrote to major bookmakers seeking information on bets placed days before Rishi Sunak announced the election would take place on July 4.

The watchdog's preliminary investigation is also said to have shed light on many more people and is now looking at bets made in the days before Mr Sunak announced the May 22 election date.

Former ministers have blamed Mr Sunak for the scandal, while others have called for those under investigation to be suspended if found guilty.

Saturday evening, Sunday time reported that Conservative data chief Nick Mason was under investigation, becoming the fourth Conservative to be questioned over the issue. Mr. Mason denies any wrongdoing.

Home Secretary James Cleverly said he had no knowledge of ministers betting on the election timetable.

My view has always been that those in government should focus on satisfying the people of this country.

Johnson blasts morally repugnant Farage over Putin comments

Boris Johnson has accused Nigel Farage of morally repugnant repeating Vladimir Putin's justification for invading Ukraine.

The former prime minister, who defended the UK's support for Ukraine, accused Britain's Reform leader of spreading Kremlin propaganda.

Mr Farage said he was not an apologist for the Russian president, but what I have been saying for 10 years is that the West has played into Putin's hands, giving him an excuse to do anything anyway. what he wanted to do.

In response to these comments, Mr. Johnson replied: No one provoked Putin. No one poked the bear with a stick.

The Ukrainian people voted overwhelmingly in 1991 to become a sovereign and independent country.

They had every right to apply for membership in NATO and the EU. There is only one person responsible for Russian aggression against Ukraine in 2014 and 2022: Putin.

Trying to spread blame is morally repugnant and repeating Putin's lies.

Listen: Conservative aide calls Rwandan politics c**t in leaked recording

A conservative parliamentary candidate and aide to James Cleverly called the Rwandan government's plan crap in a leaked recording. James Sunderland, Mr Cleverlys' parliamentary private secretary, asks if anyone has their phone on before making the remark, in audio obtained by the BBC and released by the Labor Party. Mr Sunderland went on to defend the plan and say it would deter migrants from attempting to cross the Channel. But it's not a question of politics. This is about the effect of the policy. These are the second or third order effects, he added. Mr Cleverly told Sky News his aide was making a very counterintuitive statement to attract public attention.

Phillipson: Voters are truly disgusted by the betting scandal

Shadow Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson said there was real disgust among voters over allegations of general election betting.

When asked if she had ever placed a bet on a political event, Ms Phillipson replied BBC Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg: No, I don't think so, it's just a few occasions in my life where I've played a point, it's not really my thing.

I don't think that's really the point. The question here is whether people who had inside knowledge of what was happening used that information to place a bet.

People across the country will be placing bets, but I think there's a real disgust among so many voters at what we're seeing here as some pretty shocking behavior.

Rishi Sunak promised us his government would be different, he didn't take action against the candidates involved, he should suspend them, and as Michael Gove said, this only reminds people of the worst excesses of the Tories over the of the last 14 years.

View photos The advantages of comparing online car insurance quotes are the following: Online quotes can be obtained from anywhere and at any time. Unlike physical insurance agencies, websites don't have a specific schedule and they are available at any time. Drivers that have busy working schedules, can compare quotes from anywhere and at any time, even at midnight. Multiple choices. Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Online quotes will allow policyholders the chance to discover multiple insurance companies and check their prices. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless. Usually, insurance companies will do research about a potential customer before granting him coverage. Online quotes can be sorted easily. Although drivers are recommended to not choose a policy just based on its price, drivers can easily sort quotes by insurance price.
