New law bans use of social media for active Turkish army personnel
ANKARA
A recently enacted law prohibits military personnel from sharing social media posts on any platform while serving in barracks or duty stations across the country and in cross-border areas of operations.
The legislative move follows TikTok posts made by Turkish military personnel earlier this year, identified before terrorist attacks on bases in northern Iraq, sparking controversy. Subsequently, defense authorities banned the use of smartphones in regions designated for counterterrorism operations.
Operations Claw-Lock launched in April 2022 are a series of Turkish counterterrorism efforts aimed at eliminating hideouts used by the PKK in the northern regions of Iraq, designated as a terrorist organization by Trkiye, the United States and the European Union.
As an extension of this ban, a new omnibus bill relating to the status of military personnel and conscription rules was ratified in Parliament in recent weeks. The new measures, which are now awaiting approval from President Recep Tayyip Erdoan, will come into force once signed and published in the Official Gazette.
By law, military personnel are prohibited from revealing their identity or that of their comrades.
Additionally, military personnel are prohibited from sharing military information, documents, location data or any media containing such content, including text, photographs, audio recordings and videos, while performing their duties. or activities.
The banned platforms explicitly included “radio, television, internet, social media, newspapers, magazines, books and all other media,” local media reported.
Furthermore, the phrase “all forms of written, visual, auditory and electronic mass communication tools” comprehensively encompasses all areas of broadcasting subject to the ban. Personnel contravening this directive will be subject to “barracks confinement” sanctions.
The legislation, which encompasses regulations beyond the use of social media, also provides for the granting of pensions to military personnel who retired due to lack of a position but did not meet the age requirement to qualify for A pension.
