Polish President Andrzej Duda visits China; plans to talk about Ukraine with Xi Jinping

Polish President Andrzej Duda is in China on a visit that brings the leader of a NATO member to a country that supported Russia in its all-out invasion of Ukraine.

He was due to meet Chinese leader Xi Jinping on June 24 and said peace in Ukraine would be discussed.
Asked if he thought China held the key to peace in the Russia-Ukraine conflict, Duda said: I think to a large extent, yes. Although China claims to be neutral in the fighting, it blames NATO expansion for pushing Russian President Vladimir Putin to launch the invasion and maintains strong trade and diplomatic ties with Moscow. Poland borders Ukraine and has provided refuge to those fleeing fighting and maintained a hard line against further expansion of Russian aggression.
Mr Duda said he would also speak to Mr Xi about Belarus' migratory pressure on the border with Poland, as a form of hybrid warfare that also includes cyberattacks. Mr Duda will also seek visa exemption for Poles traveling to China and seek opportunities to increase Polish exports there, in order to balance their trade relations.
According to Polish state statistics, 13.9 percent of the country's imports last year came from China, while Polish exports to China were only a fraction of that amount. Certain commercial agreements must be signed during the visit.
On Wednesday, Duda will fly to the Shanghai financial center to attend a Poland-China economic forum.
