Thursday's presidential debate between President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump is the first time in modern politics that the two presumptive candidates have debated this early in the general election season. Trump has yet to announce his vice presidential nominee, saying he chose the person “in his mind” and “no one knows” who was chosen. The former president also hinted that his chosen appointee will likely be present at Thursday's debate. Stephen Neely, professor of public affairs, joins LiveNOW from FOX.

Former President Trump says he knows who he will choose as his vice presidential nominee, but says he hasn't told anyone yet.

During an interview with reporters over the weekend, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee said he had chosen a vice presidential candidate.

“In my mind, yes,” Trump said when NBC News asked him Saturday at an outlet in Philadelphia if he had chosen his running mate.

When asked if his chosen person knew about it, the former president replied: “No, no one knows.”

Trump added that his chosen person will “most likely” attend Thursday's first debate between Trump and President Biden, which will take place in Atlanta.

“They will be there,” added the former president. “I think we have a lot of people coming.”

Trump was also interviewed at the outlet by Fox News' Alexis McAdams and discussed the timing of his running mate announcement.

“I will announce it right around the time of the convention,” Trump reiterated to Fox News, pointing to the Republican National Convention, which begins Monday, July 15, in Milwuakee.

Trump took questions from reporters while stopping at Tony and Nick's Steaks, a well-known cheesesteak restaurant in Philadelphia's South Side.

The former president later headlined a rally at nearby Temple University. Philadelphia is the largest city in Pennsylvania, a key battleground state.

As Trump heads to New Orleans Monday evening for a campaign fundraiser with House Majority Leader Rep. Steve Scalise of Louisiana as his special guest, the president is expected to stay at Camp David to prepare for the debate on Thursday.
