Joe Biden crushing Donald Trump by 23 points among young voters

Young voters overwhelmingly support President Joe Biden ahead of the 2024 election, according to a new poll.

The CBS News/YouGov survey found that former President Donald Trump, the presumptive Republican Party nominee, had a slight lead over Biden among likely voters, 50% to 49%. However, Biden has a 23-point lead when the poll results are filtered to take into account the opinions of voters aged 18 to 29.

The poll found that 61% of likely voters under 30 said they would vote for Biden if the election were held today, while 38% said they would vote for Trump. About 60% of people ages 18 to 29 voted for Biden in the 2020 election.

The poll surveyed 2,460 adults between June 17 and 21, including an oversample of 743 adults aged 18 to 29. The margin of error for the total sample is 2.8 points and 5.2 points for adults aged 18 to 29.

The poll finds that about half of young voters believe that the ages of Biden and Trump — Biden is 81 and Trump is 78 — make them out of touch with young people. Some 48 percent of voters under 30 believe neither Biden nor Trump understands the needs and concerns of young people, while 26 percent of young voters said only Biden understands their needs, while 20 percent said declared that only Trump understood them.

The study also found that only 17 percent of young voters were excited about the presidential candidates, while 37 percent were disappointed.

Asked for comment, Trump spokesman Steven Cheung pointed to a May poll that showed Trump leading Biden in five battleground states.

Newsweek has contacted the Biden campaign for comment via email.

The most recent polls show the November election remains close, with Biden and Trump statistically tied or holding only a narrow lead in the polls, even after Trump was convicted on 34 counts of tampering commercial files at the end of May. Trump has denied any wrongdoing and will be sentenced in July.

Meanwhile, Biden's campaign is working to energize young voters, facing fears that he is losing support from Democrats' crucial voting bloc, including anger over his handling of Israel's war in Gaza .

Biden also often touts his work on student debt on the campaign trail. His administration is moving forward with a new massive debt cancellation plan after the Supreme Court overturned its first attempt last year, and separately erased the student debt of more than 4 million people through the programs existing.

Last month, he decided to reclassify marijuana as a less dangerous drug.
