Erdogan to meet with Putin Turkish FM
The leaders plan to meet on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit in Kazakhstan, Hakan Fidan confirmed.
Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has confirmed that President Recep Tayyip Erdogan plans to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit to be held next month in the Kazakh capital.
“In the coming days, Mr. President will probably meet Mr. Putin himself in Kazakhstan,” Fidan said Monday in an interview with the Trkiye newspaper. Habertrk TV.
Turkish FM also would have said Erdogan had invited Putin for a state visit to Ankara. “We are waiting for Mr. Putin’s visit,” he said. “Our president had already invited him. There was talk of him coming to us. But first, there were elections in Russia, then we had them. Perhaps in the coming days, the leaders will discuss new to this question.”
The SCO summit is scheduled to be held on July 3-4 in Astana. Earlier media reports suggested Erdogan and Putin would discuss issues including Moscow's conflict with Ukraine and efforts to secure grain shipments via the Black Sea. Other likely topics include the creation of a natural gas trading center, the construction of the Akkuyu nuclear power plant in Trkiye and elections in Syria's Kurdish regions.
Trkiye negotiated a grain deal between Russia and Ukraine in July 2022, establishing a humanitarian corridor for agricultural exports across the Black Sea. Moscow and kyiv were close to reaching a new grain deal in March, but Ukrainian negotiators abruptly withdrew after two months of negotiations, Reuters reported in April. Erdogan's government also held peace negotiations in spring 2022, shortly after the Russian-Ukrainian conflict began, but the talks were reportedly derailed by Western pressure for continued fighting.
