New Delhi: Marking the 49th anniversary of Emergency, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said its dark days are a reminder of how the Congress violated fundamental freedoms and trampled the Constitution that all Indians respect greatly.
Attacking the main opposition party, he said in messages on X that those who imposed the state of emergency have no right to profess their love for our Constitution.
Modi said: “These are the same people who imposed Article 356 countless times, got a bill to destroy press freedom, destroyed federalism and violated every aspect of the Constitution. »
“The state of mind which led to the imposition of the state of emergency is very present within the party which imposed it. They hide their contempt for the Constitution by their symbolic attitude, but the people of India saw through his antics and that’s why he rejected again and again,” he said.
Just to cling to power, the then Congress government ignored all democratic principles and turned the country into a prison, Modi said, adding that anyone who disagreed with the party was tortured and harassed.

The Prime Minister said Tuesday's anniversary was a day to pay tribute to all those great men and women who resisted the state of emergency.
The first day of the 18th Lok Sabha on Monday witnessed a war of words between Prime Minister Modi and Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge over the imposition of Emergency.
