Verdict reserved on pleas of Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi in Iddat case

ISLAMABAD: Additional District and Sessions Judge Muhammad Afzal Majoka reserved the verdict on the pleas of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, seeking suspension of their sentence in the iddat affair.

The decision will be announced on June 27 at 3 p.m. The couple's lawyer Salman Safdar and Khawar Manekas' lawyer Zahid Asif Chaudhry appeared in court.

Meanwhile, the hearing on their applications to have their convictions overturned has been adjourned until July 2.

Earlier this month, the Islamabad High Court (IHC) ordered the sessions court to deliver a verdict on Bushra Bibi's plea for stay of conviction in the Nikah case within ten days. Bushra Bibi had approached the IHC to challenge the conviction in the Nikah case, where she and Imran Khan were sentenced to seven years in prison and fined Rs 500,000 each.

Imran Khan married Bushra Bibi in February 2018 in Lahore. The ceremony took place in the presence of relatives and close friends, but the founding sisters of the PTI were not present. The Nikah was performed by Mufti Saeed, with former PTI chief Awn Chaudhary and former special assistant to the Prime Minister Zulfi Bukhari as witnesses.

Last year, Bushra Bibi's former husband Khawar Maneka claimed the marriage was illegal and violated sharia law, accusing the couple of marrying during the three-month iddat period following their divorce and fornication. The court finally sentenced Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi to seven years' imprisonment and a fine of Rs 500,000 each in the 'un-Islamic' iddat case. Judge Qudratullah announced the verdict.
