Palace comments on People's Court judgment against Jokowi
TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – The Presidential Palace responded to the People's Court which tried President Joko's government “Jokowi” Widodo. Presidential Special Staff Coordinator Ari Dwipayana stressed that the government is receptive to both criticism and support.
“Criticism is common in democratic countries. Criticism can be a constructive contribution to improve all government areas,” Ari said in a short message to Tempo Tuesday June 25.
Ari explained that miscellaneous opinions, perceptions, and evaluations of government performance are normal in a healthy democracy. The government too appreciate positive backpublic support and trust, such as the Litbang Kompas investigation.
The latest Kompas investigation, published on June 20, showed that public satisfaction with Jokowi-Ma'ruf's administration increased from 73.59 percent in December 2023 to 75.6 percent in June 2024.
“The important thing is that we respect each other's different points of view,” Ari noted.
The Extraordinary People's Court convened the University of Indonesia (UI) Wisma Makara People's Court in Depok, West Java on Tuesday, June 25. Nine judges from diverse backgrounds, including human rights activist Asfinawati and democracy activist Anita Wahid, daughter of Indonesia's fourth president, the late Abdurrahman Wahid, were tasked with presiding over the trial against Jokowi's government.
They described the trial as “Nawadosa”, which means the nine sins of the Jokowi regime. These include land grabbing, persecution, corruption, militarism and militarization, commercialization of education, crimes against humanity and impunity, poverty work systems and hacking legislation.
The People's Court is an alternative court in a democratic system designed to resolve legal problems and is a movement born from the lack of confidence of civil society in state policies and law enforcement.
