Pakistan's Punjab government has arrested nearly 4,800 supporters of jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan under a public security order since the unprecedented May 9 protests last year, a move described as a chapter black in the history of Pakistan by his party.

The Punjab government on Monday told the Lahore High Court (LHC) that it had arrested 4,770 miscreants under maintenance of public order (MPO) in the province since the May 9, 2023 riots and that he then released 3,511 of them.

Following the arrest of Khan, founder of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party, in a corruption case in May last year, riots broke out in the country during which dozens of state and military installations were attacked.

According to PTI, law enforcement agencies arrested more than 10,000 party workers and leaders following the violence. More than 100 PTI leaders and workers were handed over to the army for trial in military courts.

The Punjab government, however, did not tell the court how many PTI workers were detained under various terrorism charges or under the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC) for attacking the state and military installations.

The government told the LHC that it had released 3,511 of the 4,770 Imran Khan supporters detained under the MPO.

The Maryam Nawaz government of Punjab province has been asked to file a response following a petition by PTI leader Zainab Umair challenging the detention of thousands of Khan's supporters for “abuse of power by deputy commissioners of Province “. The petitioner told the court that the government had issued “massive” detention orders against PTI leaders and workers under sections 3 and 16 of the MPO following the May 9 violence.

LHC judge Muhammad Amjad Rafiq adjourned the hearing to June 28 and sought personal appearance of the Punjab advocate general.

Reacting strongly to the state government's harsh action against Khan's supporters, the PTI in a statement on Tuesday said the arrest of around 5,000 citizens under a public safety order is a dark chapter of the history of Pakistan.

The PTI said that under the cover of the May 9 false flag operation, brutal atrocities and human rights violations were committed against Pakistani citizens. A time will come when all those involved in this brutality will be brought to justice, PTI said.
