The interlocutors discussed the ongoing dialogue between the two countries as well as issues related to regional developments, the Armenian Foreign Ministry said in a brief statement following the call.
Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan and his Turkish counterpart Hakan Fidan also discussed the process of normalization of relations between Armenia and Turkey and the implementation of agreements concluded to this effect, the statement added.
One of these agreements concluded in 2022 provides for the opening of the Turkish-Armenian border to Armenian or Turkish diplomatic passports and citizens of third countries. Ruben Rubinian, the Armenian official who negotiated the deal with top Turkish diplomat Serdar Kilic, said as recently as June 11 that unlike Yerevan, Ankara had not taken any steps to implement it.
Turkish leaders have repeatedly made clear that further progress in the normalization process depends on signing an Armenian-Azerbaijani peace deal sought by Azerbaijan. They also demanded that Armenia open an extraterritorial corridor to the Azerbaijani enclave of Nakhichevan.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinian discussed the process in a phone call on June 18. Pashinian's office said they both reaffirmed their commitment to the Turkish-Armenian agreements.
Three days after that call, Armenia received rare praise from Turkey just after announcing its official recognition of an independent Palestinian state. In response to Yerevan's unexpected decision, the Turkish Foreign Ministry said Ankara would continue its efforts to get more countries to recognize Palestine.
