24 people face detention over alleged links to Glen in payphone investigations

Turkish prosecutors have issued arrest warrants for 24 people, including former and former military officers and former military cadets, over their alleged links to the Glen sectarian movement, based on recordings of telephone calls, the TR724 information site. reported Tuesday.

The Ankara General Prosecutor's Office issued arrest warrants against 16 people based on allegations of association with the movement, based on public telephone records.

Glen and the movement categorically deny any involvement in the attempted coup or any terrorist activity.

The detainees are accused of having secretly communicated with their contacts within the movement via public telephones.

So-called payphone surveys are based on call recordings. Prosecutors speculate that a member of the Glen movement used the same payphone to call all of his contacts consecutively. Based on this assumption, when an alleged member of the movement is found in call records, it is assumed that other numbers called just before or after that call also belong to people with ties to Glen.

Following the failed coup, the Turkish government declared a state of emergency and carried out a massive purge of state institutions under the pretext of fighting the coup. More than 130,000 civil servants, including 4,156 judges and prosecutors, as well as 29,444 members of the armed forces have been summarily dismissed from their posts for alleged membership or relations with terrorist organizations, by emergency decree-laws subject to no control judicial or parliamentary.
