Pak court reserves verdict on Imran Khan, Bushra Bibi's appeal over suspension of sentences in iddat case, ET LegalWorld

Additional District and Sessions Court Judge Muhammad Afzal Majoka reserved the verdict on petitions seeking suspension of sentences of jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi in the iddat case ” non-Islamic,” ARY News reported.

Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi were sentenced to seven years in prison each by a trial court on February 3 for contracting their marriage during iddat, a mandatory period a woman in Islam must wait before contracting a second marriage after the death of her husband or a divorce.

Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi's lawyer Salman Safdar and Khawar Maneka's lawyer Zahid Asif Chaudhry appeared in court during Tuesday's hearing, according to ARY News.

The verdict will be announced on June 27 (Thursday) at 3 p.m.

Meanwhile, the hearing on the couple's applications seeking quashing of their conviction in the said case has been adjourned to July 2.

Earlier this month, the Islamabad High Court (IHC) had ordered the sessions court to announce the verdict on Bushra Bibi's plea seeking stay of conviction in Nikah case within 10 days.

According to ARY News, Bushra Bibi, the wife of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), has filed a petition in the Islamabad High Court (IHC), challenging the recent condemnation in the Nikah. case, in which the couple was sentenced to seven years' imprisonment and fined 500,000 Pakistani dollars (PKR) each.

The case relates to the couple's wedding ceremony, which took place in February 2018 in Lahore, in the presence of only close family members and friends, notably Imran Khan's sisters were not present.

The Nikah ceremony was performed by Mufti Saeed, with former PTI chief Awn Chaudhary and former Special Assistant to the Prime Minister (SAPM) Zulfi Bukhari as witnesses.

Last year, Khawar Maneka, Bibi's former husband, who approached the court, claimed that the marriage was illegal and against Sharia laws.

Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi were initially accused of marrying during the three-month “iddat period” following a divorce. Additionally, Maneka accused them of fornication.
