Erdoan slams Western support for Israeli plans to expand war in Lebanon
President Recep Tayyip on Wednesday accused Western countries of supporting Israeli plans to expand the war in Lebanon, after new Israeli airstrikes on southern Lebanon.
Trkiye stands with Lebanon and calls on regional players to support Beirut, Erdoan said during a parliamentary meeting of his ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party) in the capital Ankara.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's plans to expand the war could lead to a “major catastrophe”, Erdoan said, adding that Western support for Israel was “pitiful”.
“It is extremely disastrous and pathetic that states that speak of freedom, human rights and justice are being held captive by a madman like Netanyahu,” he said.
The consequences of Israel's war on Gaza are regularly felt on the Israeli-Lebanese border, where deadly cross-border exchanges have intensified between Israeli troops and Hezbollah fighters.
Erdoan went on to say that the photos of starving children in the Gaza Strip are a scourge of shame for the modern world and criticized Muslim countries, saying: This will also be remembered as a symbol of the world's helplessness Muslim.
Condemning Israel's continued attacks during the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha, Erdoan said he remembered the 38,000 Palestinians killed by Israeli barbarity with God's compassion.
