Turkey stands with Lebanon amid growing tensions with Israel, says Erdoan

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said Turkey stands in solidarity with Lebanon amid growing tensions with Israel and called on regional countries on June 26 to also support Beirut.
Cross-border tensions between Israel and Lebanon's Hezbollah have intensified in recent weeks, fueling fears of an all-out war between Israel and Hezbollah. Bombing on Israel's northern border has led to the evacuation of tens of thousands of people on both sides of the border.
In a speech to lawmakers from the Justice, Justice and Development Party (AKP), Erdoğan said Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu planned to expand the war from Gaza to the region.
“It seems that Israel has now turned its sights towards Lebanon after destroying and burning Gaza. We see Western countries providing support to Israel behind the scenes,” Erdoğan said.
“Netanyahu’s plans to expand the war to the region will lead to a great catastrophe,” he said, adding that Western support for Israel was “pitiful.”
“Turkey stands with the brotherly people and state of Lebanon. I call on other countries in the region to show solidarity with Lebanon,” he said.
Earlier this week, Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said the Turkish government saw a risk of conflict spreading, while commenting on tensions between Israel and Hezbollah.
Asked about Hezbollah's threat to Cyprus, Lebanon's closest EU member state, Fidan called on Cyprus to “stay away” from the conflict.
Turkey had intelligence reports showing that Cyprus had become a base for military and reconnaissance flights by “certain countries” over Gaza, Fidan said in an interview with private Habertürk television.
Cyprus said it was “in no way involved” in the conflict. It has pressured its EU partners to offer financial aid to Lebanon and recently established a maritime corridor to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza.
