Islamabad: In a surprising move, Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif appeared to extend an olive branch to his predecessor and fierce rival, incarcerated former Prime Minister Imran Khan, by offering to speak with him if he was faced with “problems” in prison. Imran has remained behind bars since August last year after being convicted in a series of cases before the February elections.

“If their [PTI] the founder is facing problems [in jail]“So I repeat: come, let’s sit down and talk,” Shehbaz said during his speech in the National Assembly on Wednesday. Let’s sit down together to move the country forward. Let's discuss for the betterment of the country. There is no other way to go. »

The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) led by Nawaz Sharif and Imran's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) have been at odds for years, especially after the general elections held four months ago, which the latter claims to have won. The PTI has accused the Shehbaz-led government of “stealing” the people's mandate and almost every session of Parliament is marked by intense disruptions by opposition lawmakers.

Interestingly, Shehbaz also called the 2018 elections, won by Imran Khan's PTI, “rigged”, echoing similar statements made by the beleaguered party. “We joined Parliament despite the [rigged] polls. The kind of slogans raised during my maiden speech will always be remembered as a dark chapter in the history books,” he said.

“Who is responsible for the bitterness? » asks Shehbaz

The Pakistani Prime Minister recalled that he had offered Imran a seat for dialogue when he was in opposition, but his request was rejected and the PTI again raised slogans against him. “If anyone faces injustice, then I believe the scales of justice should be in favor of those. [being victimised]there is no difference whether it is a politician or anyone from any walk of life,” he said.

“So who is responsible for this bitterness? [between politicians]. We don't even shake hands now,” Shehbaz added, while narrating his ordeal of being a victim of the PTI government when he was jailed during his mother's death. He said that despite being a cancer survivor with a spinal problem, he was brought to justice in the regular prison van, but never once complained.

Responding to the prime minister's comments, Opposition Leader in the National Assembly Omar Ayub reiterated that the PTI would talk with the “Form-47” government once its founder and other incarcerated workers and leaders are released from jail, Geo News reported.

“This should be on your mind: you torture our workers, you kept our workers in prison vans at 45°C. My Prime Minister Imran Khan was kept in a death cell, there is an environment like a oven there,” he said. , amid the slogans launched by the Treasury benches. Ayub said opposition colleagues must be given respect to continue the work of the House. he further claimed that when former Prime Minister Nawaz was in jail, air conditioners were installed in his cell.

Imran ready to hold reconciliation talks with government

The remarks come after Imran Khan reportedly agreed to hold reconciliation talks with the government and was “ready to forgive” what happened to him, according to PTI Chairman Gohar Khan. “We told the PTI founder that dialogue is necessary as the distance is widening. He agreed with us (on this),” Gohar told media outside Rawalpindi's Adiala jail early of the month.

Gohar said the PTI would begin its negotiations after discussing with Pashtunkhwa Milli Awami Party chief Mahmood Khan Achakzai, who has an alliance with other parties which will be taken into confidence. “Negotiations can also take place at the alliance level. PTI can also initiate itself,” he added, while asserting that the offer should not be seen as an agreement.

Imran Khan has been indicted in the Toshakhana corruption case, the encryption case for displaying a secret diplomatic cable, cases related to the May 9 riots and others. He remains behind bars in Adiala Prison in Rawalpindi while candidates from his party, which was unable to contest directly in the February elections, won the majority of seats but failed to form the government.

The former prime minister empowered his party's three-member committee to establish contacts with the establishment, the sources said. He said last week that dialogue would only take place with those who hold real power in the country. “They (the governing parties) do not have the power,” he declared.
