Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif extends an olive branch to imprisoned Imran Khan

Islamabad: Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Wednesday extended an olive branch to his predecessor and political rival Imran Khan, offering to speak with him if he faces “problems” in prison.

Khan, the founder of his Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party, has been in jail since August last year after being convicted in some of the nearly 200 cases against the 71-year-old cricketer-turned-politician since his ouster power. in April 2022.

Sharif's olive branch to Imran came a day after his adviser indicated to keep Khan in jail indefinitely.

Sharif's political adviser, Rana Sanaullah, said in a television interview that the government wanted to keep Khan in prison for as long as possible.

There should be an effort, and there will be, so that the longer he is kept as a guest (in prison), the better, was Sanullah's response when asked if Khan would be released on bail during the final sentencing against him.

The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) led by Nawaz Sharif and Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) have been at odds for years, especially after the February 8 elections, which Khan's party claims to have won.

He said that although he is a cancer survivor and suffers from a spinal problem, he used to be taken to court in the regular prison van just to aggravate his condition, but he never complained.

Responding to Prime Minister Sharif's remarks, Opposition Leader in the National Assembly Omar Ayub Khan reiterated that the PTI would only talk with the government when Khan and other incarcerated leaders and workers were released from jail .

“This should be on your mind: you torture our workers, you kept our workers in prison vans at 45°C. My Prime Minister Imran Khan was kept in a death cell, there is an environment like a oven there,” he said. , amid the slogans launched by the Treasury benches.
