Top Pak govt officials say Imran Khan will be behind bars for as long as possible, former PM's party issues warning

Islamabad, Jun 26 (PTI) A senior government official on Wednesday said former Prime Minister Imran Khan would be kept in jail “as long as possible”, prompting his party to immediately warn against any unjust attempt to keep him there in prison. Adviser to the Prime Minister on Political Affairs, Rana Sanaullah, who is also a former Interior Minister, came while participating in a debate on ARY News channel. Khans party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), shared the clip of the program and a brief statement against Sanaullah's remarks in a WhatsApp message. Senior ruling party functionary and former Interior Minister of Pakistan, Rana Sanaullah, hints at leveling fresh charges against Imran Khan. Any further unjust attempt to keep him in jail will aggravate supporters as they eagerly await the bail granted in the Iddat case, it read. Iddat's case is the latest against Khan and if he gets bail he may get out, but if the councilor's comments are any indication, that may not be the case. The ARY News anchor asked if Khan would come out of jail if released on bail as he has not been arrested in any other case. A new case can be registered. By searching here and there, new cases may appear. There should be an effort, and there will be, that the longer he (Khan) is kept as a guest (in jail), the better, Sanullah replied. However, he added: We will keep him imprisoned in accordance with the Constitution and law. Sanaullah belongs to the ruling coalition's main party, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), which is a major rival of Khan's PTI. The gap between the two parties has widened since last year after the May 9 riots. In the run-up to the February 8 elections, Khan had argued that PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif was the favorite of the powerful military establishment, and after polling day claimed that the PML-N had stolen the mandate of his party. Sanaullah said the PTI founding leader was in jail because he was convicted by the courts. He also said that Khan did not believe in dialogue and asked what should be done in such a case. Imran Khan's speech and political agenda is to destabilize the country, Sanaullah said. He said that there is no other way in democracy than dialogue to resolve different problems, but Khan does not believe in democracy. We are a political and democratic people, he said, adding that if Khan intends to take democracy forward, then the PML-N has no enmity with him.
