Islamabad court to announce verdict in Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi's Iddat case today

Islamabad: A local court in Islamabad will today announce the verdict on pleas filed by former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi seeking suspension of their sentences in the iddat case, which could bring an end to the imprisonment of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), Pakistan-based Geo News reported.

Imran Khan, who was ousted from power by the opposition's motion of no confidence in April 2022, has been facing several charges, including corruption and terrorism, since his removal as Prime Minister of Pakistan.

Since August last year, the PTI founder has remained in jail after being convicted in the Toshakhana case and later convicted in other cases ahead of the February 8 elections.

Imran Khan has remained behind bars due to his conviction in the iddat case. However, he has been awarded relief in other cases including Rs 190 million and Toshakhana, and an acquittal in the Cypher case, according to the Geo News report.

District Court Sentences Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi to 7 Years in Prison

Earlier in February, the district court had sentenced the PTI founder and Bushra Bibi to seven years each in prison after the trial court found their nikah fraudulent after Bushra Bibi's former husband Khawar Maneka s is addressed to the court against the couple's marriage.

On June 25, the district court and the sessions court reserved their verdict on the pleas against the conviction of Khan and Bushra Bibi, after the IHC directed to decide the issue of suspension of sentences within 10 days, Geo News reported.

The court also gave one month to rule on the petition filed by the couple against their conviction. Meanwhile, Bushra Bibi had sought a ruling on her plea filed before the sessions court seeking suspension of her sentence.

The court will announce the reserved verdict on June 27 at 3 p.m. (local time) while the hearing on the couple's plea seeking overturning of their conviction in the said case will resume on July 2, Geo News reported.

The PTI was expecting a favorable decision, which would be a major relief for Imran Khan, who was acquitted in some cases or released on bail in others. However, it is also likely that the government will try to block his release, as Pakistan's Prime Minister's Advisor on Political and Public Affairs, Rana Sanaullah, on Tuesday gave credence to reports that the federal government was considering registering new cases against PTI founder.
