British Jewish support for Labor increases significantly
Support among British Jews for the Labour Party has increased significantly since Keir Starmer took control of the party, reaching slightly higher support than the general population ahead of the July 4 election, the Institute for Jewish Policy Research revealed in a survey on Tuesday.
In what the JPR says is the largest ever survey of Jewish voting intentions in the UK, 45.8% of Jewish voters are expected to vote for the Labor Party, compared to 41.9% in the national election.
This support for Labor represents a significant change from the 2019 election, when Jeremy Corbyn led the party. In 2019, 11% of Jews reported voting for the Labor Party, with Starmer's election in 2020 leading to a 22% increase.
Labour–Conservative split
According to JPR, the rise in Jewish support for the Labor Party corresponded with a decline in support for the Conservative Party's internal turmoil when Boris Johnson, Liz Truss and ultimately Rishi Sunak became prime ministers.
Despite support for the Conservatives falling from 61% to 29% among British Jews, support for the Conservatives remains higher than the 22.2% of the general population in 2024.
Support for the Liberal Democrats has also declined significantly, from 22% to 8% among Jews since 2019, the survey found, with the general population reporting 10.9% support. British Jews, however, were more supportive of the Green Party with 9.9% support, compared to 5.8% for the general population.
The general population is also more likely to support British reform at 15% compared to 6% for Jews. JPR said there were about the same number of right-wing Jews as other British subjects, but Reform UK had failed to split the right-wing vote. British Jews are expected to vote mainly for the two main parties, Labor and the Conservatives.
This dynamic changed with age, with younger Jews much more willing to vote for other parties.
Religious denomination is an important factor in the differences observed in voting intentions. Strict Orthodox and Traditional Orthodox Jews are more likely to vote Conservative than Labor, 65.5% versus 15.2% and 52.5% versus 28.6%, respectively.
There were 59.6% of progressive Jews who intended to vote Labor, and only 18.1% for the Conservatives, while 51.4% of unaffiliated Jews were determined to vote Labor. Only 14.2% of unaffiliated Jews wanted to vote Conservative, but were much more likely to vote for other parties, with more than a quarter voting for smaller political movements.
JPR recruited a sample of 2,717 people in the United Kingdom who identified as Jewish through emails to Jewish community organizations, participant referrals, and marketing campaigns.
