PTI criticizes verdict against Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi

ISLAMABAD: Reacting to the rejection of appeals by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi in the iddat case, the former ruling party announced that it would challenge the verdict before the High Court.

The party founded by Imran Khan has slammed the district and sessions court's “ridiculous” decision to reject applications for suspension of sentences handed down against the party founder and his wife in the iddat case.

Speaking outside the Islamabad court, PTI general secretary Omar Ayub Khan said the party would challenge the verdict in the Islamabad High Court (IHC).

“We will immediately challenge this verdict before the High Court,” declared the opposition leader in the National Assembly, while deploring the “politicization and militarization” of private affairs between husband and wife.

The party's reaction comes after Additional Sessions Judge Afzal Majoka announced the verdict, reserved on Tuesday, with the hearing on the central plea related to quashing of their convictions scheduled to take place on July 2.

The PTI founder and Bushra were each sentenced to seven years in prison in February this year after a trial court found their nikah fraudulent as Khawar Maneka, Bushra's ex-husband, moved the court against the couple's marriage.

The couple was indicted in the iddat case on January 16, 2024. After a 14-hour hearing in Adiala jail, the trial court reserved its verdict on February 2 and imposed seven years in prison each on Khan and Bushra on February 3.

In today's 10-page order, the court said there was no reason to suspend the sentence.

“…[there is] no grounds for suspension of [the] the sentence is available to both the petitioners. Accordingly, both the petitions under Section 426 Cr.PC are dismissed,” he said.

Continuing his media address, Ayub took a shot at Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and recalled that he had unequivocally communicated to the Prime Minister during the assembly that no negotiations would take place unless Khan, Bushra, senior leaders of the party, including Shah Mahmood Qureshi, Sanam Javed and all those currently incarcerated are released and their charges against them are dropped.

“God willing, our movement will accelerate in the future and we will protest everywhere,” he added.

Meanwhile, the party, reacting to the district and sessions court verdict, said: “Absolutely ridiculous […] An unprecedented case in the history of our country and in Islamic history; was globally condemned and caused immense embarrassment to Pakistan. »

“Every individual responsible for making and carrying out this affair will fall into the dirtiest and darkest alleys of history,” read the statement posted on the party's official X account.

Khan, currently incarcerated at Adaila Prison in Rawalpindi, would likely be released if the verdict was in his favor. The PTI founder remains acquitted in the Toshakhana and Cipher cases respectively, while his £190 million guarantee was also approved.

The former prime minister was also granted bail in the cases registered on May 9 in Lahore, Rawalpindi and Faisalabad. On the other hand, the Federal Investigation Agency also questioned him twice in prison regarding an anti-state message shared on X, formerly Twitter. There is, however, no new case against the PTI founder.
