Erdogan: Israel “turned its gaze” towards Lebanon after destroying and burning Gaza
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Turkey stands in solidarity with Lebanon as tensions with Israel rise and called on regional countries to support him.
Cross-border hostilities between Israel and Lebanon's Hezbollah have intensified in recent weeks, fueling fears of an all-out war between the two forces.
Bombing along Israel's northern border has led to the evacuation of tens of thousands of people on both sides of the border.
In a speech to his party representatives, Erdogan said Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was considering expanding the Israeli war in the region.
“Israel seems to have set its sights on Lebanon after destroying and burning Gaza. We see that Western countries are supporting Israel behind the scenes.” “Netanyahu's plans to expand the war in the region will lead to a great disaster,” Erdogan said, adding that Western support for Israel was “deplorable.”
Erdogan's office said late tonight that the president spoke by phone with Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati and reiterated the message that Turkey stands with Lebanon “against Israel's aggressive policies.”
Earlier this week, Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said the Turkish government saw a risk of the conflict spreading, commenting on tensions between Israel and Hezbollah.
Asked about Hezbollah's threat to Cyprus, Lebanon's closest EU member, Fidan urged Cyprus to “stay away” from the conflict.
