No legal relief for ex-PM Pak Imran Khan, wife in 'un-Islamic' marriage case: report

A district and sessions court in Islamabad on Thursday rejected requests by former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan, as well as his wife, Bushra Bibi, to suspend their seven-year sentences in the Iddat case, Dawn reported .

The verdict, which was reserved on Tuesday, was notably announced today by Additional District and Sessions Judge (ADSJ) Afzal Majoka.

Lawyers, activists and members of civil society all harshly condemned Iddat's conviction, calling it a “blow to women's rights to dignity and privacy.”

The move sparked protests in Islamabad from activists and criticism in Karachi from demonstrators who opposed “state intrusion into people's private lives.”

Before the general elections, on February 3, an Islamabad court sentenced the couple to seven years in prison and a fine of PKR 500,000 each for getting married during the Iddat period of Bushra Bibi.

The couple were sentenced to 14 years in prison in the Toshakhana case, while Imran and his foreign minister, Shah Mahmood Qureshi, were sentenced to 10 years in prison in the Cypher case, the same week that the verdict has been rendered.

Imran and Qureshi were found not guilty in the Cypher case earlier this month, and the sentences in the Toshakhana case were suspended in April.

The case was earlier heard by district and sessions judge Shahrukh Arjumand, who reserved the verdict in May.

On the day of the planned announcement, he requested that the case be transferred, citing Maneka's request to be removed from the appeals panel. The file was then transferred to ADSJ Majoka.

However, Bushra Bibi's lawyer had requested the Islamabad High Court for his release on bail and suspension of his sentence. In the same vein, the magistrate court was directed by the Islamabad High Court to decide on the pleas of the founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and his wife within ten days.
