Pakistani court rejects appeals by former PM Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi in illegal marriage case

In a setback for former Prime Minister Imran Khan, a Pakistani court on Thursday rejected appeals by Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, to suspend their sentences in an illegal marriage case.

The case dates back to February 3, when an Islamabad court convicted the couple just days before the February 8 general elections. The conviction followed a complaint filed by Bushra Bibi's ex-husband, Khawar Fareed Maneka.

Khan alleged that the couple's marriage was entered into during the Bushra Bibis Iddat period, a period under Islamic law where a woman can only remarry four months after her divorce or the death of her husband.

In his plea, Maneka urged the court to declare the marriage null and void.

Additional District and Sessions Judge Afzal Majoka had reserved the verdict on the conclusion of the process on Tuesday after conducting the hearing.

On Thursday, as he announced the verdict to a packed courtroom and rejected the pleas filed by the couple, it dashed hopes of their release from Adiala jail in Rawalpindi where they were imprisoned.

In its 10-page order, the court said there was no reason to suspend the sentence.

Khan, 71, has been behind bars since August last year after being convicted in the Toshakhana corruption case and then convicted in other cases ahead of the February 8 elections.

The sentence in the Toshakhana corruption case was suspended in April while earlier this month, Khan was acquitted in the encryption case. Therefore, Imran and Bushra now remain incarcerated in Adiala jail in Iddat's case alone.

After the verdict, PTI workers started protesting outside the district and sessions court and also blocked the road.

Reacting to the verdict, Leader of Opposition in the National Assembly Omar Ayub said Khan's party would challenge the order in the Islamabad High Court.

Speaking to the media, he reiterated that there would be no negotiations with the government until all leaders and workers of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf are released.

Khan's party called the development absolutely ridiculous.

In a message posted on its official account X, the PTI said that this case was unprecedented in the history of our country and in Islamic history and had been globally condemned and had caused immense embarrassment to Pakistan.

PTI spokesperson Raoof Hasan on Thursday reacted sharply to the verdict, calling it a sheer injustice and a blatant display of total disregard for justice.

Hasan said Khan and Bushra would immediately approach the Islamabad High Court against the shameful judgment of Afzal Majokas in a fabricated, baseless and false case, clearly reflecting the injustice and vindictiveness of every word and sentence of the judgment .

He lamented that Pakistan was completely under fascist rule and the country's judiciary was at the mercy of state thugs and scoundrels, indirectly referring to the military establishment.

Hasan said that this heinous case was used as a justification to keep Imran Khan and his wife in jail, which is evident from the blatant violation of law and justice in this case at every stage since day one.

Earlier, the former first couple had challenged the conviction before District and Sessions Judge (ADSJ) Shahrukh Arjumand, who recused himself at a time when the hearing was over and the court was supposed to announce the verdict.

The case was transferred to ADSJ Majoka last week and the Islamabad High Court ordered the sessions court to decide in 10 days.
