China bids farewell to two giant pandas on their way to San Diego Zoo | San Diego
Two giant pandas are on their way to the United States, where they will land at the San Diego Zoo, the first such import of the enormous bears from China in more than two decades.
The loan was finalized in February after Chinese leader Xi Jinping suggested sending pandas to the San Diego Zoo as ambassadors of China-U.S. friendship.
Officials from the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance were in China for a farewell ceremony commemorating the passing of giant pandas Yun Chuan and Xin Bao.
The celebration included cultural performances, video greetings from Chinese and American students and a gift exchange between conservation partners, the zoo said in a statement. After the ceremony, the giant pandas began their journey to Southern California.
The farewell celebrates their journey and highlights a collaboration between the United States and China in vital conservation efforts, Paul Baribault, president of the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance, said in a statement.
“We look forward to continuing our work together to ensure the survival and prosperity of this iconic species,” continued Mr. Baribault.
Yun Chuan, a little boy almost five years old, has ties to California, the wildlife protection alliance previously said. His mother, Zhen Zhen, was born at the San Diego Zoo in 2007 to Bai Yun and Gao Gao.
Xin Bao is a nearly four-year-old female described as a sweet and witty introvert with a sweet round face and big ears.
Chinese state television reported that the bear pair, a species that is notoriously picky about its food, enjoy meals of fresh bamboo, fruits, vegetables and a cornbread known as Wotou.
