Election 2024: How to watch the Biden-Trump presidential debate

ATLANTA (AP) The first general election debate of the 2024 election season is taking place, and it's a historic moment no matter what happens on stage.

President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump participate in Thursday night's debate in Atlanta. Not only is this the first-ever matchup between a sitting president and a former president, but it is also the first debate for either candidate in this year's elections. And this is happening so early in the general election campaign cycle that neither man will have yet accepted their party's official nomination.

Here's how to watch the debate:

What time is the debate?

The debate will begin at 9 p.m. ET on Thursday. It is moderated by CNN's Jake Tapper and Dana Bash.

What channel is the debate on?

CNN is broadcasting the debate live on its broadcast network, as well as on CNN International, CNN en Espaol and CNN Max. Viewers can also stream it without logging in on the CNN website. Several channels have also agreed to broadcast the event live.

Where is the debate?

The setting for the first general election debate is at the CNN studios in Atlanta. Unlike the Republican primary debates, no audience will be present.

Once a Republican stronghold, Georgia was a crucial battleground in 2020. Both parties are bracing for another tight race in the state this year. Trump also faces indictment in Georgia for trying to find 11,780 votes and overturn Biden’s victory based on false or unproven theories of voter fraud.

Which candidates will be on stage?

Two candidates Biden and Trump will be on stage. For a while, it looked like they wouldn't meet at all.

The Biden campaign had proposed excluding third-party candidates, such as Robert F. Kennedy Jr., from the debates altogether. Under debate commission rules, Kennedy or other third-party candidates could qualify if they gained enough ballot access to claim 270 electoral votes and scored 15 percent or higher in a selection of national surveys.

CNN and ABC announced the same qualifying threshold, saying candidates will need to reach at least 15% in four separate national polls of registered voters or likely to meet their standards, between March 13 and a week before Thursday's game . Last week, CNN reported that Kennedy had failed to meet those goals.

Trump hasn't participated in any of the GOP primary debates, so this is his first time on stage this cycle. Biden also did not debate any of the Democrats challenging him.

Last month, Biden announced he would not participate in the fall presidential debates sponsored by the nonpartisan commission that has organized them for more than three decades. His campaign team instead proposed that the media directly organize the debates between the presumptive Democratic and Republican candidates.

Hours later, Biden said he accepted an invitation from CNN, adding: “It's your turn, Donald.” » Trump, who had insisted he would debate Biden anytime and anywhere, said on Truth Social that he would be there too, adding: “Let's get ready to Rumble!!! » Shortly after, they agreed to a second debate.

What's new next?

ABC will host the second debate on September 10. The network did not provide details on where the event would be held, other than saying it would be moderated by hosts David Muir and Linsey Davis.

And let's not forget the running mates. Trump hasn't named his running mate yet, but Vice President Kamala Harris has accepted an invitation from CBS News to debate her potential rival in-studio on July 23 or Aug. 13.
