Xi Jinping bluntly exposes China's weaknesses vis-à-vis the United States
Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Chinese President Xi Jinping said his country faces several challenges in the competition to become the world's technology source. He openly admitted that Chinese innovation was relatively weak and that scientists were overwhelmed.
“Currently, the war we are facing is international competition,” Xi Jinping said, quoted by Business Insider, Thursday (6/27/2024).
Xi Jinping does not deny that the development of science and technology in his country is very rapid. However, China's innovation capabilities are still considered weak.
In his speech on Tuesday (25/6) local time, Xi Jinping mentioned the word innovation 55 times. This refers to the development of artificial intelligence (AI), quantum technology, biotechnology and new energy.
China's current technological advancement is still too widely divided into several sectors, Xi said, adding that more harmonious coordination is needed in the development of AI technology.
He emphasized that the most important thing to drive innovation is national independence, especially in the face of various obstacles from the United States and its allies.
“The scientific and technological revolution and the struggle between superpowers are interdependent,” Xi Jinping said.
Although he did not directly mention the United States, Xi stressed that China must immediately address challenges related to core technologies currently controlled by foreigners.
The statement came after the United States threatened to expand sanctions against China for access to advanced semiconductor technology. One of them is to prevent Huawei from purchasing basic components to develop advanced semiconductors.
Additionally, Xi Jinping acknowledged that there is a crisis of digital talent capable of competing in the AI sector. He said China needs to improve its incentive system to better reward scientists and technology experts for AI development.
“We must increase our sense of urgency. We must go further in our innovation efforts to occupy a leading position in scientific and technological competition and future development,” he said.
