General elections 2024: the conservatives at their lowest popularity score one week before the vote
Keir Starmer continues to outpace his Tory rival
With one week to go before the election, our latest poll reveals that Sunak continues to have an extremely low approval rating. Only one in five Britons (19%) have a positive opinion of the Prime Minister, compared to 75% who have a negative opinion. This gives him a net popularity score of -56, equal to what we found last week, which represents a new record for the Prime Minister.
In fact, data from a survey conducted between this week's weekly update and last week revealed that Sunak had slipped slightly to an even lower ebb of -57.
Attitudes towards the Conservative Party are identical to those towards its leader (-56), which is the party's lowest score since YouGov launched the favourability tracker in 2016.
Only 43% of those who supported the party in 2019 still have a favorable opinion of the Conservatives, compared to 53% having an unfavorable opinion, a net score of -10.
Labour leader Keir Starmer continues to be significantly more popular (or less unpopular) than his Conservative counterpart. More than one in three Britons (36%) have a favourable opinion of Starmer, although a majority still have an unfavourable opinion (56%).
The Labour Party is slightly more popular than its leader: 40% have a positive opinion against 52% a negative opinion.
Nigel Farage is the party leader with the second highest favourability rating, at 27%, followed by Lib Dem leader Ed Davey on 26% – although Farage is far more unpopular (66% to 34%). Four in ten Britons say they don't know. As for Davey, a recent YouGov poll showed that most Britons could not recognise him when shown his photo, including a third of Lib Dem voters.
The Greens' leaders are largely unknown: only 11% and 6% respectively have a favourable opinion of Carla Denyer and Adrian Ramsay, while 71-78% say they don't know.
The Green Party itself is much better known and liked. Four in ten Britons (41%) have a positive opinion of the Greens, as many as have an unfavourable opinion, making it the most popular national party, albeit with a net favourability score of zero.
Almost as many people have a positive view of the Liberal Democrats (39%), while 27% have a favourable view of Reform UK, making them more popular than their Conservative rivals, although they remain unpopular overall (61% have a negative view).
