Pakistani appeals court upholds conviction of Imran Khan and his wife for illegal marriage

ISLAMABAD (AP) A Pakistan appeal court on Thursday upheld the conviction and seven-year prison sentence of former Prime Minister Imran Khan and his wife for their 2018 marriage, which was found to be illegal, it said those responsible.

The decision drew strong condemnation from supporters of Khan and his party, who had expected the couple to be released on bail.

Judge Afzal Majoka's verdict came two days after the end of arguments by the defense lawyer and the applicant, who is the former husband of Khan's wife, Bushra Bibi. His legal team said it would challenge the court's decision.

In February, Khan and his wife were sentenced to seven years in prison after a court found the couple had violated the law that requires a woman to wait three months before remarrying.

Bibi, Khan's third wife, was a spiritual healer who had been married to a man who claimed to have divorced her in November 2017, less than three months before her marriage to Khan. Bibi claims they divorced in August 2017.

The couple denied violating the three-month waiting period, a requirement of Islamic law and respected by Pakistan.

Since his ouster from power in 2022 by a no-confidence motion in parliament, Khan has faced more than 150 legal cases, including for inciting violence after his arrest in May 2023. He is serving multiple prison sentences in Adiala prison in the garrison city of Rawalpindi.

He has denied any wrongdoing and his supporters say the accusations are politically motivated.

During the riots that broke out across the country in May, Khan's supporters attacked several military installations, stormed an air base in Mianwali, in the eastern province of Punjab, and burned down a building housing the state radio of the Pakistan, in the northwest of the country. The violence only stopped after Khan was released by the Supreme Court.

Khan, who remains the country's popular opposition leader, was arrested again in August 2023 when a court sentenced him to three years in prison for corruption. He has not been seen in public since then as his trials have been held in prisons for security reasons.

Thursday's decision was condemned by supporters of Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party, which has a strong presence in parliament. “This is absolutely ridiculous,” said Omar Ayub, a senior leader of the party.

This latest development comes two days after a US Congressional resolution called for a full and independent investigation into allegations of interference or irregularities in Pakistan's February 8 vote, provoking a strong backlash in Islamabad.

The resolution was seen as a boost to Khan's party, which has insisted that its victory was turned into a defeat by the country's electoral commission, a charge it has denied.

But the Pakistani Foreign Ministry on Wednesday said that we believe in constructive dialogue and engagement based on mutual respect and understanding and therefore such resolutions are neither constructive nor objective. It said the resolution stemmed from an incomplete understanding of the political situation and the electoral process in Pakistan.
