We're not sure what will happen when President Biden and former President Donald J. Trump take the stage to debate in Atlanta tonight.

We do know, however, that the first debate between the major party candidates is taking place earlier than usual in the election season. And we also know that we've seen a version of this spectacle before.

Their past confrontations have been punctuated by bitter insults, constant interruptions and have been political spectacles judged more on appearance than substance.

This year, with candidates offering radically different visions for the country, it is hard to imagine an election in which substance matters more.

So today, at least on The Run-Up, there is no buzzer, no microphone muting, and no debate theater.

Instead, we call on four Times colleagues to discuss what the candidates are actually promising for a second term on four key issues: the economy, immigration, abortion and foreign policy.
