Trump's potential VP picks JD Vance to attend Atlanta debate

Former President Trump previously said he would announce his choice of a vice presidential nominee at or around the Republican National Convention in mid-July.

CLEVELAND On Thursday night, President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump will face off in Atlanta for their first nationally televised debate since 2020.

Although the debate will not be hosted by a live audience, the three politicians shortlisted to become Trump's vice president, U.S. Senator JD Vance of Ohio, U.S. Senator of Florida Marco Rubio and Governor of Dakota North Doug Burgum, should be in Atlanta.

The rules of the debate have been clearly established by CNN, the news agency that is organizing the debate. The debate will last 90 minutes and the candidates' microphones will be cut off when the other candidate speaks.

“Half of it, probably more than half, is practice,” said Dr. Nicole Kalaf-Hughes, an associate professor at Bowling Green State University. “It's not something you can do in a hurry, so knowing where that time limit is and having that internal clock is going to play a big role in it.

Kalaf-Hughes explains that debates are more useful when the candidates are unknown to voters. With Trump and Biden now dominant political figures in the United States, she says many Americans have probably already made up their minds. This shifts the focus to these undecided voters.

Former President Trump had previously said he would announce his vice presidential pick at the Republican National Convention in mid-July. But he is now suggesting the decision could be announced at any time.

Kalaf-Hughes says the Trump campaign must strike a careful balance in decision-making.

The risk is you want someone who's going to generate a lot of exciting media attention, but who's not going to, at least in the eyes of the Trump campaign, historically, steal the spotlight from Trump, Kalaf-Hughes said.

Kalaf-Hughes makes clear that the ideal vice presidential candidate is someone who could potentially win over marginal voters without alienating Trump's already established base. She says you want a candidate who is free of scandal and who will unequivocally support Trump throughout his term.

In 2016, Vance openly expressed his disapproval of the former president. However, in recent years, Vance has publicly reversed that stance, supporting Trump and standing fiercely by his side in his legal troubles.
