CHP leader predicts early elections in less than two years
ANKARA
Main opposition leader Zgr Zel has suggested that Turkey could hold snap elections in less than two years due to the government's failure to tackle growing economic problems.
“In my opinion, the government cannot fulfill its five-year term. I am considering early elections in a year and a half,” the leader of the Republican People's Party (CHP) told reporters on June 27.
Do I personally want early elections? Yes, I want them even next weekend, he said.
Trkiye participated in the legislative and presidential elections in May 2023, and under normal conditions, President Recep Tayyip Erdoan and the parliament have a term until May 2028.
The CHP's victory in the March 2024 local elections has sparked calls for early elections among opposition groups, although Zel has said he will not do so because he is aware that many people voted for his party to elect local mayors.

Recalling his observations that more and more people are now calling for a change of government, he said.
We will certainly make our voice heard louder, in line with the people's demand for early elections. At least 360 votes are required in Parliament. Technically speaking, this is not possible if the government does not approve it.
That being said, Zel stressed that economic difficulties are worsening and the measures taken by the government against galloping inflation are not helping to restore the economic resilience of the people.
