Who won between Donald Trump and Joe Biden?

(NewsNation) The first presidential debate of the 2024 election has concluded, and political experts joined NewsNation to discuss the format, content and how the candidates competed.

NewsNation hosts Dan Abrams and Elizabeth Vargas joined Chris Cuomo to discuss some of the hottest topics from the debate: Was Joe Biden on target? Was Donald Trump different than his opponents think? Will tonight make a difference?

“I think [the debate] could make a difference. I’m not sure that’s the difference the Biden campaign wants to make,” Vargas said.

Biden's deep voice has worried some observers.

“He didn't seem sure of himself, he didn't seem sure of himself. He regained a little vigor, energy, later, especially during the fights under former President Trump,” Vargas said.

However, after the debate, Biden told reporters he thought he “did well.”

“It's hard to argue with a liar.” The New York Times noted that he lied 26 times, while acknowledging that he had a sore throat.

The particular format of the debate also gave food for thought.

“I think the format, which was muted microphones and no audience, you know, didn't sit very well with Biden tonight,” Vargas said.

For Trump, however, the format proved beneficial, as the former president was forced to refrain from intervening or appearing disruptive during the debate.

But for Abrams, the format was just one piece of the puzzle.

“I don’t think it’s the format that’s become the problem here. There’s no way to say that Joe Biden had a good night,” Abrams said. “I think if somebody comes up after this debate and says Joe Biden had a great night! That’s not a credible assessment.”

Abrams believes the debate was not a battle for Republicans or Democrats but for swing voters, but he said neither stood out enough to sway those voters.

Cuomo summed up the trio's opinion: “If any of you had played like they did tonight, you'd be out of a job.” »
